At the sidelines of the 47th Session of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), a high-level two-day Validation Workshop for the 2026–2028 Strategic Plan was convened in Maseru, Kingdom of Lesotho, from 12th to 16th April 2026.

The workshop was led and moderated by Prof. Benon C. Basheka, CEO and Managing Director of Radix Management Consulting (U) Ltd and Principal Consultant at Benon Basheka & Associates. The engagement brought together Committee Members, Secretariat officials, and key stakeholders to critically review and refine the Committee’s next strategic direction.

Strategic Focus of the Workshop

Drawing on guidance from the Committee and substantive technical inputs from the Secretariat, the workshop undertook a detailed review of the proposed Strategic Plan pillars. Particular attention was given to ensuring alignment with the African Union’s strategic priorities and relevant global child rights frameworks.

  • Alignment with African Union Agenda 2063 and continental child rights frameworks.
  • Assessment of institutional performance under the 2021–2025 Strategic Plan.
  • Identification of implementation gaps and structural challenges.
  • Strengthening advocacy impact and policy influence across Member States.
  • Enhancing resource mobilisation and strategic partnerships.

Building on Lessons, Driving Forward Impact

The validation process built on a critical reflection of the achievements and gaps of the 2021–2025 Strategic Plan. While notable progress has been made in advancing child rights advocacy across the continent, persistent challenges in implementation, coordination, and financing remain key priorities for the next strategic cycle.

The revised Strategic Plan framework is therefore designed to consolidate areas where advocacy has led to tangible policy outcomes, while introducing stronger accountability mechanisms and results-based implementation pathways.

“Strategic plans must move beyond aspiration — they must deliver measurable protection and real outcomes for every African child.” — Prof. Benon C. Basheka
