Professor Benon C. Basheka, CEO and Managing Director of Radix Management Consulting, participated as a speaker at the virtual launch of the book “Beyond Mimicry: The Potential of African Endogenous Governance Systems.” The event, hosted by the New South Institute (NSI) and Afrospectives on 26 November 2025, brought together African scholars, policymakers, and governance practitioners to explore how indigenous governance philosophies can inform contemporary governance reform across the continent.

The webinar focused on the theme “The Stakes and Challenges of Revalorizing African Endogenous Systems of Governance and Justice.” Speakers examined how traditional African governance mechanisms — rooted in consensus-building, social harmony, restorative justice, and elder-led mediation — offer valuable insights for addressing modern governance crises.

Highlights from Prof. Basheka’s Presentation

Prof. Basheka delivered a structured webinar presentation titled “African Endogenous Systems of Governance and Justice in Contemporary Contexts.” His presentation explored:

  • Historical foundations of African governance, including consensus-building, elder councils, and communal decision-making.
  • The centrality of restorative justice in African societies, contrasting it with retributive Western legal systems.
  • Traditional institutions such as family circles, clan tribunals, councils of elders, chiefs, and spiritual authorities.
  • The procedures of indigenous justice systems — storytelling, mediation, public hearings, reconciliation, and ritual cleansing.
  • Key legal precedents recognizing customary law, including landmark South African Constitutional Court cases.
  • Opportunities and challenges in integrating customary governance with contemporary state systems.

Why This Conversation Matters

Prof. Basheka emphasized the need to reclaim African governance heritage as a legitimate and effective foundation for modern administrative systems. He argued that indigenous approaches — when adapted thoughtfully — can strengthen justice delivery, community participation, and institutional legitimacy.

The event saw strong participation, with over 80 registered attendees engaging in discussions on how African endogenous systems can inspire governance innovation, legal reform, and culturally grounded policy development.
